"La Falo de Uŝero-Domo" by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story first published in 1839. A narrator visits his childhood friend Roderick Usher at his isolated family mansion. Roderick and his twin sister Madeline suffer from mysterious illnesses, and Roderick believes the ancient house itself possesses a dark sentience. When Madeline apparently dies and is entombed within the house, strange sounds begin echoing through the halls during a violent storm, building toward a terrifying revelation about what lies buried below.
