Das große Jagen
About this book
"Das große Jagen" by Ludwig Ganghofer is a historical novel published in 1918. Set in early eighteenth-century Berchtesgaden, the story unfolds during the Counter-Reformation's religious persecution. Lutheran hunter Leupolt falls in love with Luisa, a sculptor's daughter raised in strict Catholic faith. Their forbidden romance plays out against the backdrop of Protestant expulsion, religious intolerance, and antisemitism. Through characters like a protective Catholic priest and a sympathetic Jewish doctor, Ganghofer advocates for human compassion across religious divides in this final work exploring themes of faith, exile, and tolerance.
