D'Artagnan, now older and disillusioned, receives a mission from Cardinal Mazarin to reunite his legendary companions. But the four friends find themselves on opposing sides during the Fronde rebellion. New characters emerge, including Athos's adopted son Raoul and Mordaunt, son of the infamous Milady de Winter. Political intrigue swirls around Mazarin, Cromwell, and Charles I as old loyalties are tested.
