"La Divina Comèdia: Infièr" by Dante Alighieri is a narrative poem begun around 1308 and completed around 1321. This first part of The Divine Comedy follows Dante's harrowing journey through Hell, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. The pilgrim encounters souls receiving divine punishment for their earthly sins across nine descending circles. Allegorically, it represents the soul's recognition and rejection of sin. Drawing on medieval Catholic theology, the work helped establish the Tuscan language as standardized Italian.
