"La Maison du Chat-qui-pelote" by Honoré de Balzac is a novella published in 1830. Set in early 1811 Paris, it follows Augustine, daughter of an austere draper, who marries Théodore de Sommervieux, an aristocratic painter captivated by her beauty. As the initial passion fades, their vastly different worlds and values collide. Augustine finds herself lost in a society she cannot understand, while her husband grows distant and cruel. This opening work of Balzac's "La Comédie humaine" explores the dangers of marriages across social worlds.
