״Storia della decadenza e rovina dell'impero romano, volume 05״ מאת אדוארד גיבון הוא חלק מחיבור היסטורי בן שישה כרכים, שראה אור בין השנים 1776 ו־1789. מחקר מונומנטלי זה מתחקה אחר הציוויליזציה המערבית משיאו של האימפריה הרומית ועד לנפילת קונסטנטינופול בשנת 1453. תוך שימוש במקורות ראשוניים ובגישה שהייתה מהפכנית לזמנה, גיבון בוחן את ההתנהגויות וההחלטות שהובילו לשקיעתה הממושכת של רומא. יצירתו משלבת אלגנטיות ספרותית עם קפדנות מחקרית, אף שדעותיו האנטי־קלריקליות והערכתו הביקורתית כלפי הנצרות עוררו מחלוקת עזה.
