"תולדות שקיעתה ונפילתה של האימפריה הרומית — כרך 1" מאת אדוארד גיבון הוא חיבור היסטורי שראה אור ב-1776. מחקר מונומנטלי זה בן שישה כרכים משתרע משנת 98 עד 1590, ומתעד את שיא האימפריה הרומית, עליית הנצרות הקדומה כדת מדינה וקריסת האימפריה המערבית. גיבון בוחן את אובדן הסגולה האזרחית ואת פלישות הברברים כגורמים לנפילת רומא, ובה בעת בוחן באופן שנוי במחלוקת את תפקידה של הנצרות. החיבור, שנכתב בפרוזה מרוחקת אך ביקורתית, הוא יצירת מופת של עידן הנאורות שעיצבה את המתודולוגיה ההיסטורית, אף שעוררה דיון מדעי מתמשך על התזה המרכזית שלה.
