«تاریخ زوال و سقوط امپراتوری روم — جلد اول» اثر ادوارد گیبون، اثری تاریخی است که در سال ۱۷۷۶ منتشر شد. این پژوهش عظیمِ شش‌جلدی، دوره‌ای از سال ۹۸ تا ۱۵۹۰ را دربرمی‌گیرد و اوج امپراتوری روم، ظهور مسیحیت نخستین به‌عنوان دین رسمی، و فروپاشی امپراتوری روم غربی را روایت می‌کند. گیبون از دست رفتن فضیلت مدنی و یورش‌های بربرها را از عوامل سقوط روم می‌داند و در عین حال، نقش مسیحیت را به‌طور بحث‌برانگیزی بررسی می‌کند. این شاهکار عصر روشنگری که با نثری بی‌طرفانه اما نقادانه نوشته شده است، روش‌شناسی تاریخ‌نگاری را شکل داد، هرچند دربارهٔ تز محوری آن همچنان بحث‌های علمی ادامه دارد.
