دربارهٔ این کتاب

«تاریخ انحطاط و سقوط امپراتوری روم، جلد ۰۱» اثر ادوارد گیبون، اثری تاریخی است که در سال ۱۷۷۶ منتشر شد. این پژوهش عظیم، تمدن غرب را از اوج امپراتوری روم تا سقوط قسطنطنیه دنبال می‌کند. گیبون رفتارها و تصمیم‌هایی را بررسی می‌کند که به افول طولانی‌مدت روم و در نهایت فروپاشی آن انجامیدند. او با تکیه بر منابع اولیه ــ که برای دوران او کاری نامعمول بود ــ الگویی روش‌شناختی بنا نهاد که سبب شد از او به‌عنوان نخستین تاریخ‌نگار مدرن روم باستان یاد شود. فصل‌های بحث‌برانگیز او درباره نقش مسیحیت، بحث‌های شدیدی برانگیخت و به تلاش‌هایی برای سانسور انجامید.
