«Utilitarianism» لجون ستيوارت مل مقال كُتب عام 1861 يدافع عن النظرية الأخلاقية للنفعية. يرى مل أن الأفعال تكون صوابًا حين تعزّز السعادة وخطأً حين تُنتج نقيضها. وهو يصقّل الأفكار النفعية السابقة بالتمييز بين الملذات الفكرية العليا والملذات الجسدية الدنيا، مع تناول انتقادات عديدة للنظرية. ويسعى العمل إلى التوفيق بين المبادئ النفعية والأخلاق العادية وإظهار كيف تخدم القواعد الأخلاقية التقليدية أعظم سعادة.
