Alexandre Dumas ve Auguste Maquet’nin “Monte Kristo Kontu, III. Cilt” adlı eseri, 1844-1846 yılları arasında tefrika hâlinde yayımlanmış bir romandır. Genç denizci Edmond Dantès, düğün gününde kıskanç arkadaşlarının ihanetine uğrar ve Château d’If’te hapsedilir. On dört yıl sonra, saklı bir hazinenin yerini açıklayan bir mahkûm arkadaşının yardımıyla Dantès kaçar ve Monte Kristo Kontu adında zengin bir adama dönüşür. Hayatını mahvedenlerden sistemli bir şekilde intikam alırken sadık kalan az sayıdaki kişiyi ödüllendirir.
