John Stuart Mills ”Kvinnans underordning” är en essä som publicerades 1869 och utarbetades tillsammans med hans hustru Harriet Taylor Mill. I en tid då det europeiska samhället betraktade kvinnor som naturligt underlägsna och med rätta underordnade männen utmanade Mill grunderna för ojämlikheten mellan könen. Han hävdade att påståenden om kvinnors naturliga begränsningar var grundlösa spekulationer, eftersom kvinnor aldrig hade fått möjlighet att bevisa sin förmåga under jämlika förhållanden. Mill menade att en frigörelse av halva mänskligheten skulle gynna inte bara enskilda kvinnor utan hela samhället.
