この本について

ジョン・スチュアート・ミルの『女性の隷属』は、1869年に刊行された論文であり、妻ハリエット・テイラー・ミルと共同で執筆された。当時のヨーロッパ社会が、女性は生まれつき劣っており、男性に従属するのが当然だとみなしていたなかで、ミルは性別による不平等の根拠に異議を唱えた。彼は、女性が平等な条件のもとで自らの能力を証明することを一度も許されてこなかった以上、女性の生まれつきの限界に関する主張は根拠のない憶測にすぎないと論じた。ミルは、人類の半数を解放することは、個々の女性だけでなく社会全体にも利益をもたらすと主張した。
