John Ruskin tarafından yazılan “Modern Painters, Cilt 1 (Toplam 5 Cilt)” adlı eser, 1843 yılında yayımlanan bir sanat eleştirisi çalışmasıdır. Ressam J. M. W. Turner’ı tutkuyla savunan Ruskin, çağdaş peyzaj sanatçılarının doğayı doğru bir şekilde betimleyerek eski ustaları aştığını ileri sürer. Genç eleştirmen, yüzeydeki görünüşler ile daha derin gerçekler arasında ayrım yaparak, Turner’ın doğal güçlere dair detaylı gözlemlerden derin bir anlayışa ulaştığını belirtir. Bu etkili eser, sanatın amacı hakkındaki tartışmaları ateşlemiş ve Pre-Raphaelite akımının şekillenmesine katkıda bulunmuştur.
