يُعدّ كتاب «Storia della decadenza e rovina dell'impero romano، المجلد 04» لإدوارد غيبون المجلد الرابع من عمل تاريخي نُشر بين عامي 1776 و1789. ويتتبع هذا التاريخ الضخم، المؤلف من ستة مجلدات، مسار الحضارة الغربية من أوج الإمبراطورية الرومانية حتى سقوط القسطنطينية عام 1453. أمضى غيبون جانبًا كبيرًا من حياته في صياغة هذا العمل، مستخدمًا المصادر الأولية على نحو كان غير مألوف في عصره. ويستكشف تحليله القرارات والسلوكيات التي أدت إلى تدهور روما التدريجي وانهيارها النهائي، مما كرّسه بوصفه أول مؤرخ حديث لروما القديمة.
