Kitob haqida

Edvard Gibbonning 1776–1789-yillarda nashr etilgan “Rim imperiyasining tanazzuli va qulash tarixi, 11-jild” asari tarixiy tadqiqotdir. Ushbu monumental olti jildlik durdona G‘arb sivilizatsiyasini Rim imperiyasining yuksalish davridan 1453-yilda Konstantinopolning qulashigacha izchil yoritadi. Gibbon misli ko‘rilmagan tarzda birlamchi manbalardan foydalanib, Rimning uzoq davom etgan tanazzuliga olib kelgan xatti-harakatlar va qarorlarni tahlil qiladi. Uning xristianlikning roli haqidagi munozarali boblari keskin bahslarga sabab bo‘lgan, kinoyali va pessimistik ohangi esa Ma’rifat davri tarixiy yozuvining o‘ziga xos belgilaridan biriga aylangan.
