Het bestaat uit 87.000 woorden en is opgedeeld in zes hoofdstukken. In dit werk onderzoekt Newton het ontstaan en de geschiedenis van oude beschavingen zoals Griekenland, Egypte, Assyrië, Babylon, Medië en Perzië. Hij behandelt ook Griekse mythische figuren als Chiron en de Argonauten als historische feiten. Het werk beslaat het tijdperk van 1125 v.Chr. tot 331 v.Chr. Veel mensen rangschikken dit werk onder Newtons occulte studies.
