‘Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica’ van Isaac Newton is een driedelige werkgang die voor het eerst in 1687 werd gepubliceerd. Het is in het Latijn geschreven en bevat Newtons revolutionaire wetten over beweging en de universele zwaartekracht. Door deze theorieën werden verspreide waarnemingen samengevoegd tot een geheelvormig mathematisch raamwerk om het fysieke universum te begrijpen. Het werk verklaart onder andere het bewegen van planeten, getijden, cometen en de vorm van de aarde aan de hand van geometrische formules en empirische onderzoeken. Het wordt gezien als een van de grootste wetenschappelijke werken die ooit zijn geschreven en vormde de basis voor de moderne fysica en astronomie, waardoor onze begrijping van de natuur fundamenteel veranderde.
