”Romarrikets nedgång och fall” av Edward Gibbon är ett historiskt verk i sex volymer som publicerades mellan 1776 och 1788. Denna monumentala krönika sträcker sig från 98 till 1590 och följer Romarriket från dess höjdpunkt genom dess sammanbrott, den tidiga kristendomens framväxt som statsreligion, Bysans fall och uppkomsten av gestalter som Djingis khan. Gibbon hävdade kontroversiellt att kristendomen bidrog till Roms nedgång genom att försvaga medborgerlig dygd, vilket gav upphov till debatter som än i dag fortsätter om de verkliga orsakerna till imperiets slut.
