エドワード・ギボンの『ローマ帝国衰亡史』は、1776年から1788年にかけて刊行された全6巻の歴史書である。この記念碑的な年代記は98年から1590年までを扱い、ローマ帝国の最盛期から崩壊に至る過程、初期キリスト教が国教として台頭したこと、ビザンツ帝国の滅亡、そしてチンギス・ハンのような人物の台頭をたどっている。ギボンは、キリスト教が市民的美徳を弱体化させることによってローマの衰退に寄与したと論争を呼ぶ主張を展開し、帝国の終焉の真の原因をめぐる議論を巻き起こした。その議論は今日も続いている。
