« Histoire de la décadence et de la ruine de l’empire romain, volume 6 » d’Edward Gibbon est le sixième volume d’une œuvre historique publiée entre 1776 et 1789. Cette série monumentale retrace l’évolution de la civilisation occidentale, depuis l’apogée de l’empire romain jusqu’à la chute de Constantinople en 1453, suite aux conquêtes islamiques et mongoles. En s’appuyant sur des sources primaires peu courantes pour son époque, Gibbon examine les comportements et les décisions qui ont conduit au déclin de Rome. Sa méthodologie l’a consacré le premier historien moderne de la Rome antique ; cependant, sa perspective antichrétienne et ses jugements sévères sur les Byzantins ont suscité de nombreuses controverses.
