« The Public and Its Problems » de John Dewey est un ouvrage de philosophie politique publié en 1927. Répondant aux critiques qui tenaient la démocratie pour impraticable dans un monde moderne de plus en plus complexe, Dewey défend la gouvernance démocratique tout en reconnaissant ses défauts. Il rejette le règne des élites technocratiques, soutenant au contraire que la démocratie exige, pour réussir, un engagement public constant et une vigilance permanente. L’ouvrage redéfinit ce qui constitue « le public » et « l’État », et examine comment une véritable démocratie peut survivre au milieu des transformations technologiques et sociales du XXe siècle.
