Edward Gibbonin teos ”Rooman valtakunnan rappion ja tuhon historia — osa 5” on osa kuusiosaista teosta, joka julkaistiin vuosina 1776–1788. Tämä monumentaalinen historiateos jäljittää Rooman valtakunnan kehitystä sen kukoistuskaudesta Länsi-Rooman tuhoon, kristinuskon nousuun valtionuskonnoksi ja Bysantin kukistumiseen. Gibbon väittää Rooman sortuneen barbaarihyökkäyksiin suurelta osin kansalaistensa kansalaisveltuuden asteittaisen rapautumisen vuoksi ja tarkastelee kiistanalaisesti kristinuskon roolia tässä rappiossa etäännytetyn mutta kriittisen proosan keinoin.
