« Histoire de la décadence et de la chute de l’Empire romain — Volume 5 », d’Edward Gibbon, fait partie d’une œuvre en six volumes publiée entre 1776 et 1788. Cette histoire monumentale retrace l’Empire romain depuis son apogée jusqu’à la chute de Rome occidentale, à l’essor du christianisme comme religion d’État et à la chute de Byzance. Gibbon soutient que Rome succomba aux invasions barbares en grande partie en raison de la perte progressive de la vertu civique chez ses citoyens, et examine de manière controversée le rôle du christianisme dans ce déclin, dans une prose détachée mais critique.
