“Lịch sử suy tàn và sụp đổ của Đế chế La Mã — Tập 5” của Edward Gibbon là một phần trong bộ tác phẩm gồm sáu tập được xuất bản từ năm 1776 đến năm 1788. Công trình lịch sử đồ sộ này lần theo Đế chế La Mã từ thời kỳ đỉnh cao, qua sự sụp đổ của La Mã phương Tây, sự trỗi dậy của Kitô giáo với tư cách là quốc giáo, cho đến sự sụp đổ của Byzantium. Gibbon cho rằng La Mã khuất phục trước các cuộc xâm lược của người man di phần lớn do sự suy giảm dần dần của đức hạnh công dân trong dân chúng, đồng thời gây tranh cãi khi phân tích vai trò của Kitô giáo trong sự suy tàn này bằng văn phong khách quan nhưng đầy tính phê phán.
