״תולדות שקיעתה ונפילתה של האימפריה הרומית — כרך 5״ מאת אדוארד גיבון הוא חלק מיצירה בת שישה כרכים, שפורסמה בין השנים 1776 ל־1788. חיבור היסטורי מונומנטלי זה מתחקה אחר האימפריה הרומית משיא כוחה ועד נפילתה של רומא המערבית, עליית הנצרות כדת המדינה ונפילת ביזנטיון. גיבון טוען כי רומא נכנעה לפלישות הברברים בעיקר בשל אובדן הדרגתי של המעלה האזרחית בקרב אזרחיה, ובוחן באופן שנוי במחלוקת את תפקידה של הנצרות בתהליך שקיעתה, בפרוזה מאופקת וביקורתית.
