«تاریخ انحطاط و سقوط امپراتوری روم — جلد پنجم» اثر ادوارد گیبون، بخشی از مجموعه‌ای شش‌جلدی است که بین سال‌های ۱۷۷۶ و ۱۷۸۸ منتشر شده است. این تاریخ‌نگاری سترگ، امپراتوری روم را از اوج شکوهش تا سقوط روم غربی، ظهور مسیحیت به‌عنوان دین رسمی و سقوط بیزانس دنبال می‌کند. گیبون استدلال می‌کند که روم عمدتاً به‌دلیل از دست رفتن تدریجی فضیلت مدنی در میان شهروندانش در برابر یورش‌های بربرها تسلیم شد و با نثری بی‌طرفانه اما انتقادی، نقش مسیحیت را در این انحطاط به‌گونه‌ای بحث‌برانگیز بررسی می‌کند.
