يُعدّ كتاب «تاريخ انحطاط وسقوط الإمبراطورية الرومانية — المجلد الخامس» لإدوارد غيبون جزءًا من عمل مؤلف من ستة مجلدات، نُشر بين عامي 1776 و1788. يتتبع هذا التاريخ الضخم الإمبراطورية الرومانية منذ أوجها مرورًا بسقوط روما الغربية، وصعود المسيحية بوصفها دين الدولة، وسقوط بيزنطة. ويرى غيبون أن روما استسلمت للغزوات البربرية إلى حد كبير بسبب الفقدان التدريجي للفضيلة المدنية بين مواطنيها، مستكشفًا على نحو مثير للجدل دور المسيحية في هذا الانحطاط بأسلوب نثري متجرد لكنه نقدي.
