ジョン・デューイによる『民主主義と教育：教育哲学入門』は1916年に出版された書籍である。デューイは、教育が未熟な新来者と成熟した社会の一員との間の隔たりを埋めるものだと論じている。意図的な指導がなければ、どの世代も文明を維持するために必要な知識や習慣、技能を受け継ぐことはできない。社会がより複雑になるにつれて、この教育的課題は一層深刻化する。デューイの思想は大きな影響力を持ったものの、アメリカの学校では完全に採用されることはなく、思考の美的側面よりも職業性を重視した彼の考え方に対しては批判もある。
