Dewey hävdar att utbildningen överbrider klyftan mellan omaturera nyankomna och mognade medlemmar av samhället. Utan avsiktlig undervisning kan varje generation inte ärva den kunskap, de sedvänjor och färdigheter som är nödvändiga för att upprätthålla civilisationen. Även om Deweys idéer var inflytelserika, togs de aldrig i fullt utsträckning till användning i amerikanska skolor, och kritiker ifrågasätter hans betoning av yrken framför den estetiska grunden för tänkande.
