דמוקרטיה וחינוך: מבוא לפילוסופיה של החינוך“ מאת ג’ון דיווי הוא ספר שהופק בשנת 1916. דיווי טוען כי החינוך ממלא את הפער בין אנשים חדשים, לא בשלמים, לבין אנשים בוגרים בחברה. ללא הדרכה מתוכננת, שום דור לא יכול לרשת את הידע, המנהגים והמיומנויות הנדרשים לשימור התרבות. ככל שהחברות הופכות למורכבות יותר, אתגר החינוך הזה גדל. אף שהרעיונות של דיווי היו משפיעים, הם לא נקבלו במלואם בבתי הספר האמריקאיים, ומבקרים תוהים על הדגש שהוא שים על מקצועים לעומת השורשים האסתטיים של המחשבה.
