„The School and Society” מאת ג’ון דיואי הוא חיבור חינוכי שפורסם בשנת 1899. טקסט רב־השפעה זה מניח את היסודות לחינוך פרוגרסיבי, בטענה שעל בתי הספר להסתגל לשינויים העמוקים שחוללה המהפכה התעשייתית. דיואי טוען שילדים לומדים בצורה הטובה ביותר באמצעות חוויות שיתופיות ומעשיות, ולא באמצעות קליטה פסיבית של עובדות. הוא מדמה את הכיתות לסדנאות פעילות שבהן התלמידים חוקרים בעיות ממשיות ומקשרים את הלמידה לחיים. בהסתמך על ניסויים בבתי הספר המעבדתיים של אוניברסיטת שיקגו, דיואי מציג טיעונים בעד חינוך ממוקד־ילד, המגשר בין תאוריה למעשה.
