Om denne boken

"Mimózák és krizántémok" by Ignácz Kúnos is a collection of folktales written in the early 20th century. It presents Japanese fairy tales and legends in musical, rhyme-rich retellings, framed by a reflective essay on Japan’s spirit, nature-worship, and the Shinto-Buddhist outlook. Humble villagers, capricious deities, and talking creatures move through transformations and trials that resolve in gentle, memorable morals. The opening of the collection pairs a lyrical cultural introduction with the first “magic tales.” The essay paints Japan’s landscapes and festivals, explains ancestor reverence and a sunny Shinto sensibility, and illustrates the cultivated “Japanese smile” with an anecdote about a storyteller-friend who bears grief with composure; it also celebrates the folk imagination’s fondness for symbols, punishment and reward, and light irony. The initial stories then unfold briskly: a spring restores an old couple’s youth until excess turns the wife into a baby; a thumb-sized boy serves a noble, defeats a demon, and grows to manhood with a magic whip; a fisherman marries a mysterious visitor who is a mermaid and must return to the sea, leaving him long life; a kind girl receives winter strawberries from seasonal spirits while her cruel kin perish in the snow; rain and storm clouds fail to spoil the Moon festival; a stonecutter’s chain of wishes ends in contentment with his own craft; and larks learn to sing by day while star-souls keep night’s quiet. Throughout, the verse-like cadence, personified seasons and celestial beings, and clear moral turns set the tone for the folktales that follow.
