Hva kan vi hjelpe med? — Smart Book

Select the text you need in any other app (a browser, messenger, or notes) and, in the selection popup or the «Share» menu, choose «Smart Book». A small window opens where you tap «Translate» — the text immediately appears on the Smart Book translator screen with its translation, dictionary and voice-over. In that same window you can pick «Create a parallel book» instead of translating, to save the fragment as a book to read. Smart Book also plugs into Android's system translate actions, so it can show up right in the context menu when you select text.

Open «Translators settings» and find the «Words» block. First, in the «Service» row, choose a dictionary that can show definitions — for example «Google» or any AI service. Then tap the «Action» row (labeled «Action when clicking on a single word») and pick «Definitions» from the list. After this, tapping a word in a book will open its definition instead of the usual translation.

At the bottom of «Translators settings» there is a «Compare» button. It opens a screen where the same text is translated by several services at once and the variants are shown for you to rate; the hint reads «Select the translation options you like». Mark the ones you like and tap «Continue» until «Comparison is over» appears — based on your choices the app keeps only the services you picked enabled. This way you can blind-test and settle on the translators you like best.

Offline translation is handled by the «Offline Translator» service. Assign it to the translation type you need: in «Translators settings», in the «Selected text» block (or «Text», or «Words»), tap «Service» and choose «Offline Translator»; alternatively, tap its icon right in the translation panel while reading. The first time you use it, an «Offline translation» window appears asking «Download the offline translation model so you can translate without an internet connection?» — tap «Download». Once the language model is downloaded, any selected fragment is translated without internet; you can also turn on «Download automatically for all languages».

The main translation language is set in «Translators settings» → «Translation language». While reading, a row of codes for recently used languages appears next to the translate button — tap the code you need to instantly switch the translation to that language, and long-press a code to remove that language from the row. If you pick a translation language that matches the book's own language, the app warns you about it and suggests choosing a different one.

Automatic translation is turned on per book. Open the book, open the menu in the reader's top bar and choose «Book settings», then switch on the «Automatic translation» toggle (labeled «Display translation of all paragraphs»). After that, the translation of every paragraph appears under the original automatically as you read through the chapter. The service that performs this translation is set separately — in «Translators settings», in the «Automatic translation» block.

While reading, with the translation panel open, a row of service icons appears at the bottom — tap a service's icon to instantly re-translate the current text with it. The set of services on the panel is configured in «Translators settings» → «Translation panel» → «Services displayed in the panel», and the default service for each case is set by the «Service» row in the «Words», «Text» and «Selected text» blocks. Among the services are «Translate with an external app», which hands the text to a third-party translator app, and «Share with an external app», which sends the text through the system Share menu. Choosing these lets you translate the selection in external apps without leaving the book.

The «Translator screen» can be opened from more than just inside the app. Add the Smart Book widget or the «Translator» shortcut to your home screen (long-press the app icon), or add the translator tile to the quick-settings shade — a tap opens the translator screen with its input field right away. It also opens when you select text in other apps and choose «Smart Book». Which service and action this screen uses is configured in «Translators settings», in the «Translator screen» block.

Open «Settings» → «AI» → «Artificial Intelligence Settings» and tap «Create Action». On the «Select a template» screen you can pick a ready-made template (for example «Definitions», «Explanation» or «Character») or tap «Create from scratch» to start with a blank action. Next, set the «Action Name», choose an «AI Service», and in the «Prompt» field write your question, inserting variables with the buttons in the «Variables» section: {{Text}} — the tapped word, selected fragment or paragraph, {{Context}} — the surrounding text, plus {{Book}}, {{Author}}, {{Source Language}} and {{Target Language}}. Tap «Save» — the action then appears in the expanded «Translation panel» while reading, where a tap fills in the data and shows the AI's answer. For the action to work you need a connected AI service with your own API key.

These features work through AI, so first connect an AI service with your own key («Settings» → «Translation» → «Translation panel» → «Add API Key»). Then open «Settings» → «AI» → «Artificial Intelligence Settings» and enable the items you want in the «Default actions» list: «Definitions», «Etymology», «Explanation», «Examples», «Synonyms». Every enabled action shows up in the expanded «Translation panel». Now, while reading, tap a word (or select a fragment), slide the translation panel up and tap the action you need — the AI will show its answer.

Make sure an AI service with your key is connected, then in «Settings» → «AI» → «Artificial Intelligence Settings» enable the «Grammar» action in the «Default actions» list. While reading, select the sentence you need with a double or long tap (or open the paragraph's translation), slide the «Translation panel» up and tap «Grammar» — the AI will produce a grammatical analysis of the selected text. If you like, you can also create your own action with a grammar question via «Create Action», using the {{Text}} variable.

Go to «Settings» → «Translation» → the «Translation panel» section and open «Own API keys», then tap «Add API Key» and choose ChatGPT. Paste your key into the «API Key» field, type the OpenAI model you want into the «AI model» field (for example gpt-4o-mini, or any other one available to you), and tap «Save». After that, in the «Translation panel», for the type you need — «Words», «Text», «Selected text» or «Automatic translation» — tap «Service» and choose ChatGPT. You can add several keys with different models and switch between them.

Open «Settings» → «Translation» → the «Translation panel» section. Here, for each translation type — «Words», «Text» (a paragraph), «Selected text» and «Automatic translation» — tap «Service» and choose the AI you want; if a service requires your key, add it via «Own API keys» → «Add API Key». The service chosen for «Automatic translation» shows the translation of every paragraph automatically as you read, and it is the one used when downloading an offline paragraph translation. Saving a book's translation for offline reading is enabled in that book's own settings.

An NVIDIA key is connected through «Custom AI» — a connection to an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Go to «Settings» → «Translation» → «Translation panel» → «Own API keys» → «Add API Key» and choose «Custom AI». In the «API endpoint URL» field enter the address of NVIDIA's OpenAI-compatible chat, in the «Headers» field add an authorization line with your free key in the form Authorization: Bearer your_key (one header per line), and in «AI model» type the name of the free open model. Tap «Save», then choose «Custom AI» as the «Service» for the translation type you need.

While reading, tap a word — a panel appears at the bottom with the translation and an add button marked with a plus icon. Tap this button to add the word to your dictionary; once saved, the icon turns into an edit button, showing the word is already there. To save a word instantly without opening its card — or to remove an already saved word just as quickly — long-press this button. All the words you add are then gathered on the «Dictionary» screen, where you can also delete a word you no longer need by tapping its card and confirming «Delete the word?».

Open the «Dictionary» screen and tap the «Narrator» icon in the top bar. A player opens that voices all your saved words in turn: it pronounces the word, holds a «Pause before translation», shows and reads out the translation, then after a «Pause between words» moves on to the next. Start it with the Play button; the «Show player settings» button opens the options, where you can turn on «Show context sentence», «Read context aloud», «Shuffle» for a random order, and «Auto-repeat (loop)» so the list plays over and over.

When you save a word from a book, the sentence it appeared in is automatically attached to it as context. To add or change the context manually, open the word card (either while saving, or by tapping the word in the «Dictionary» list) and tap the row with the translation — a window opens with «Translation» and «Context» fields. Type your text into the «Context» field and tap «Save». This context is then visible in the dictionary, is included in exports, and can be shown and read aloud in the «Narrator» via the «Show context sentence» and «Read context aloud» settings.

On the «Dictionary» screen open the «Export» menu item and choose a format — «Export to TXT file» or «Export to XLSX file». A list of all your words opens, each with a checkbox: tick only the words you want and clear the rest (the «Select all» and «Deselect» buttons help you manage the selection quickly). Then tap the export button, and the app will offer to save or share a file containing only the selected words. Export requires an active subscription or the «Export data» purchase.

The easiest way is through word statistics: in an open book, open the reader menu, choose «Statistics», then «Word statistics in the book». In the list of all words, tap a word to mark it as learned (tapping again clears the mark). You can also add words by hand: «Profile» → «Learned words» → «Add», enter the words (each is saved separately) and tap «Save». To mark every word in the current chapter at once, choose «All words to Learned» in the reader menu (a paid feature) and confirm «Mark all words from this chapter as Learned». To highlight them, go to «Profile» → «Learned words» and turn on the «Highlight in Text» toggle — a «Color» row appears beneath it; tap it and choose a highlight color, and from then on all your learned words are highlighted in that color right in the book text.

Open «Settings» and choose the «Pronunciation» section. At the top, in the «Synthesis Application» list, pick the speech-synthesis engine; if none is installed, the app offers to install Google's speech app (Speech Services by Google). Use «Choose Voice» to select a voice for the language you need, and the «System Settings» button opens Android's system speech-synthesis settings, where you can download missing languages and voice data. If a voice sounds too fast, too quiet or unclear, adjust «Pronunciation speed» (and «Pronunciation speed of a translation») and «Volume» on the same screen.

AI voices (ElevenLabs, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Speechify, Amazon) are provided through a separate Smart Book synthesizer app that reads text aloud with those voices. On the «Settings» → «Pronunciation» screen the app offers to install it if it isn't there yet; once installed, select it in the «Synthesis Application» list. After that, words, paragraphs and translations are pronounced with the chosen AI voice. The same app is used when you turn a chapter into an audio file.

Open the chapter in the reader and open the menu with the button in the top-right corner, then choose «Create audio». Voicing requires the Smart Book synthesizer app: if it isn't installed, its install page opens. The chapter's text is handed to that app, where it is turned into audio with the chosen voice, including an AI voice (ElevenLabs, OpenAI, Google and others).

Open «Settings» → «Pronunciation» and turn on the «Paragraph pronunciation» and «Translation pronunciation» toggles. A «Narrator» block then appears with the «Playback Sequence» setting. Using the «Paragraph» and «Translation» buttons (marked with a plus), add the elements you want in any order and any quantity — repeats are allowed, for example Paragraph → Translation → Paragraph — and remove an unwanted element with the cross on its chip. While reading, the narrator voices each paragraph strictly in the sequence you set; the pause between readings can be set in the «Pronunciation pause, seconds» item.

Open the book in reading mode and tap the menu icon in the reader's top bar, then choose «Search». A search bar appears at the bottom — type a word or phrase and the matches are listed with their chapter shown. To search the whole book, tick the «Search all chapters» checkbox; without it, the search covers only the current chapter. Tap a found fragment and the app jumps to that spot in the text.

Open the chapter you want in reading mode, tap the menu icon in the top bar and choose «Copy text». A short chapter is copied to the clipboard; if the text is very large, the app saves it to a text file and offers to share it through the system dialog. This feature is available in the premium version.

Open the book in reading mode, tap the menu icon in the top bar and choose «Start over». Your current position is reset and the book opens again from the very beginning. This item only appears in the menu once you are reading somewhere past the first page.

First get a .srt subtitle file for the video or movie you want. On the books tab tap the plus, choose «Add Book» and then «Import Text File» — this option supports the TXT and SRT formats — and point it to your .srt file. The parallel-book builder opens, where for subtitles the separator is automatically set to «Empty string»; if you like, add subtitles in another language as the second text for parallel reading. Fill in the title, author and language and tap «Save». You can also open the .srt file directly from a file manager or send it to the app through «Share».

Bionic reading makes the beginning of each word bold so your eyes latch onto words faster and you read more quickly. Open «Settings» and go to the «Advanced» section, then turn on the «Bionic Reading» toggle. Once it is on, extra options appear: the «Bionic Reading (Translation)» toggle applies the effect to the translated text as well, and the «Bionic Text Fixation» slider (from 1 to 9, default 5) sets how much of each word is bolded. The highlight color can be changed in the reader's color settings.

Open «Settings», choose «Interface», then the «Font» item. Pick which text the font is for: «Source text font», «Translation font» or «Chinese (Simplified)». On the screen that opens, tap the «Import (ttf)» button and select a font file on your device — only .ttf files are supported. After importing, the font appears in the list; tap it to apply.

While reading, swipe your finger along the reader's top bar left or right: swiping right increases the brightness, left decreases it. The brightness changes during the gesture itself, and is remembered separately for day and night. To fine-tune it and return to the system value, use the «Brightness» slider — add it to «Quick settings» in the reader menu, or open «Settings» → «Interface».

The easiest way is through word statistics: in an open book, open the reader menu, choose «Statistics», then «Word statistics in the book». Open «Profile» → «Learned words». At the bottom of the screen there is an «Export» button — it saves all learned words for the selected language to a file you can share or save (this needs the paid «Export data» feature; without it, tapping opens the store). To import words, tap «Add»: you can type or paste words straight into the field and save them, and if you leave the field empty, an «Import Text File» button appears to load words from a txt file.

There are several free ways. First, invite friends: open «Profile» and tap «Refer to friends & get free access» (for users with limited access the item is called «Recommend to friends»). A window with your personal referral link opens — copy it and send it to friends. Installs from your link unlock features: Reverso, «Word statistics», «Access to premium books», «No ads», «Offline translation», «Export data» and «Unlimited online translation»; once the required number of installs is reached, a «Get Reward» button appears next to that feature. Second, ads: while reading, tap «Disable ads for a day» in the window that appears, watch a short video, and ads switch off for a day. Third, when your online-translation limit runs out, tap «Activate Daytime Trial» in the popup: this gives you a day of free access in one tap, with no card required.

In an open book, open the reader menu, choose «Statistics», then «Word statistics in the book». It lists every word in the book along with how many times each one repeats, and at the top it shows the total count of unique words and of all words. Tap the number next to a word and a search opens showing every fragment of the book where that word occurs. You can also find all uses of a word through the «Search» item in the reader menu: enter the word and the app lists every place in the book where it appears.

The app automatically creates quick shortcuts for your recently read books. On your device's home screen, press and hold the «Smart Book» app icon — a menu appears with your recent books (and the translator). Press and hold the book you want and drag it onto the home screen — the shortcut it creates opens the book right at your last bookmark. This works on Android 7.1 and newer through the launcher's built-in shortcuts feature.
